Massage Chair Glossary: Every Spec-Sheet Term Explained

Quick answer: A massage chair spec sheet mixes roller terms (2D, 3D, 4D), track shapes (S, L, SL, flex), air massage (airbags or air cells), recline modes (zero gravity) and comfort extras (body scan, heat, foot rollers, leg extension). This glossary defines each term in one or two sentences, with an example from a chair we sell, so you can compare chairs like for like.

What do 2D, 3D, 4D and 5D mean on a massage chair?

2D rollers move up and down your back and side to side. You can pick the area and technique, but not how deeply the rollers press.

3D rollers add depth: they push forward from the backrest, so you can choose a lighter or deeper press. Example: the Osaki OS-3D Ai Vito.

4D rollers keep 3D depth control and add control over the speed and rhythm within each stroke. Example: the Titan TP-Epic 4D.

5D is a brand term, not an industry standard. Read what each product page says it adds. Example: the Osaki 5D+4D Kairos Duo.

Dual mechanism ("Duo") means the chair has two separate roller units, one for the upper body and one for the lower body. Example: the Osaki Grand Duo 4D+4D.

Roller width is how far apart the two roller heads sit. Many remotes let you choose narrow, medium or wide.

Learn more in our 2D vs 3D vs 4D guide, what is 3D roller technology and dual-mechanism chairs explained.

What are S-track, L-track, SL-track and flex track?

Track is the rail the rollers travel along. Its shape decides how much of your body the rollers reach.

S-track is curved like an S to follow your spine from neck to lower back.

L-track runs down the backrest and bends under the seat, so the rollers continue to the glutes and upper hamstrings.

SL-track combines both: a spine curve plus an extension under the seat. Example: the Osaki Ai Monarch LE product page says its SL-Track system extends from your neck to your thighs.

Flex track is a track that adjusts its curve as the chair reclines or to fit the user. Brand naming varies. Example: the Fujiiryoki Calm Plus lists a Flex Frame SL Track.

See S-track vs L-track for more.

What are airbags and air cells?

Airbags (air cells) are bladders that inflate and deflate to squeeze areas such as the arms, hips, calves and feet. The two terms mean the same thing. Example: the Osaki Ai Monarch LE lists 58 airbags.

Air compression is the squeezing action the airbags create.

Airbag intensity is the setting that controls how firmly the airbags inflate, often in several levels.

Seat airbags are air cells in the seat that press on the hips and glutes, sometimes in a rocking pattern.

What is body scan?

Body scan is a short routine at the start of a session where the chair measures your shoulder height or spine curve, then sets the rollers to match. Example: the Kyota Zenyu M338 lists "TrueFit Body Scanning."

Shoulder position adjustment lets you nudge the scanned shoulder point up or down if it feels off.

What do zero gravity, leg extension and wall clearance mean?

Zero gravity is a recline position that raises your legs to about the level of your heart. Most of our chairs offer it; see what is zero gravity recline.

Leg extension (extendable footrest) is a leg rest that slides out to fit taller users. Some chairs extend it automatically.

Ottoman is another name for the leg and foot rest section.

Distance to wall (wall clearance) is how much space the chair needs behind it to recline fully. Example: the Daiwa Pegasus 2 Smart lists 0.25".

Space-saving (wall-hugger) design means the chair slides forward as it reclines, so it can sit close to a wall.

Height range is the user height the manufacturer lists the chair for. Recommended weight is the user weight it lists.

Upright and reclined dimensions are the chair's length, width and height in each position. Check reclined length against your room.

What are auto programs, manual mode and timers?

Auto programs are preset routines that choose the technique, area, speed and timing for you. Example: the Titan 4D Advent lists 24 programs.

Manual mode lets you choose the technique, area, speed, width and depth yourself.

Spot / partial mode focuses the rollers on one point or a section of your back.

Stretch program uses airbags and recline to gently pull and stretch the body. Most of our chairs list one.

Timer is the session length. Chairs stop automatically when it ends. Example: the Osaki Ai Monarch LE lists a 5-30 minute timer.

User memory (favorites) saves your own settings, where the remote offers it.

Voice control lets you start or change programs with spoken commands, where listed.

App control lets you run the chair from a phone or tablet app, where listed.

What extras show up on spec sheets?

Heat is a warming element, usually in the lumbar area, calves or rollers. Example: the Osaki Ai Monarch LE lists lumbar and calf heat. See heat in massage chairs for how it works.

Foot rollers (reflexology rollers) are rollers under the soles of your feet. Example: the Daiwa Pegasus 2 lists a Triple Reflexology Foot Roller.

Calf rollers are rollers in the leg rest that work the backs of your calves. Example: the Titan 4D Advent lists Spinning Calf Rollers.

Arm and hand massage uses airbags (and sometimes rollers) in the armrests.

Seat vibration is a vibrating pad in the seat.

Bluetooth speakers are built-in speakers that pair with your phone. Example: the Ceragem V4 lists Bluetooth speakers.

Wireless charging / USB port lets you charge a phone while you sit, where listed.

What do massage technique names mean?

Kneading is a circular, rolling squeeze of the muscles.

Tapping (percussion) is a quick rhythmic beat.

Shiatsu is pressing on points with steady pressure.

Rolling is the rollers moving up and down the back.

Gliding (Swedish) is a long, smooth stroke.

Clapping is a broader, flatter tapping motion.

Compression is the steady squeeze from airbags.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between 3D and 4D massage chairs?

3D rollers move in and out so you can control how deeply they press. 4D rollers keep that depth control and add control over the speed and rhythm of each stroke, so the massage can change pace. Both also move up, down and side to side like 2D rollers.

What is an SL-track on a massage chair?

An SL-track is a roller track that follows the curve of your spine (the S part) and continues under the seat (the L part). That lets the rollers travel from the neck down to the glutes and upper hamstrings. Check each product page for the track a chair uses.

What does distance to wall mean?

Distance to wall is how much space a chair needs behind it to recline fully. On our chairs it ranges from a fraction of an inch to more than a foot, so check the product page and measure your room before you buy.

Is 5D a real massage chair standard?

No. There's no industry standard for 5D. It's a brand term, so read what each product page says the 5D feature adds on that model before comparing it with another chair.

Is it OK to use a massage chair if I have a health condition?

Check with your doctor first if you have a health condition, are pregnant or have an implanted device. Also read your chair's owner's manual for its own safety guidance, and check the height and weight range on the product page before you buy.
