Wall-Hugger and Small-Space Massage Chairs: How Much Room You Really Need (and How to Measure)
A wall-hugger massage chair slides forward as it reclines, so it can sit just 1 to 4 inches from the wall instead of a foot or more. Wall clearance is only half the answer, though. You also need floor space in front for the reclined length, room at the sides to get in and out, and a clear path for delivery. Here is how to measure all four.
Specs checked October 17, 2026. Numbers come from each chair's product page and can change, so click a chair's name for the latest.
We've sold massage chairs to more than 30,000 customers, and "will it fit?" is a question we hear often.

How Wall-Huggers Work
In a standard recliner-style massage chair, the backrest swings back as you lean, so the chair needs room behind it. In a wall-hugger (also written wall hugger, or called a space-saving or "zero-wall" chair), the seat slides forward on a track while the backrest reclines. The back of the chair stays close to the wall, and the footrest ends up farther into the room.
The "Distance to Wall" on each product page is the manufacturer's listed clearance for the chair's recline. It is not the same as how much floor the chair covers. A chair can sit 2 inches from the wall and still reach 6 feet or more into the room when fully reclined.
"Zero gravity" is the name for a reclined position that raises your feet above the level of your heart. Our guide to what zero gravity recline is describes a torso-to-leg angle of roughly 128 degrees.
In this guide, we group the chairs we sell by their listed Distance to Wall:
- Wall-huggers: about 4 inches or less.
- Space-saving, but they need more room: more than 4 up to about 11 inches.
How Much Space Does a Massage Chair Need?
Four numbers decide whether a chair fits:
- Wall gap: the Distance to Wall on the spec table.
- Reclined length: how far the chair stretches when fully reclined (the "Dimensions Recline" line).
- Width and side room: the chair's width, plus room to step in and out on at least one side.
- Entry path: the doors, hallways, stairs and turns the boxes must pass through.
For floor depth, add the wall gap to the reclined length. That gives a rough depth from the wall to the front of the footrest. This is our own estimate, not a manufacturer figure. It assumes the listed reclined length is measured from the back of the chair, so confirm your numbers with us before you order.
Chairs that are not wall-huggers can need a foot or more behind them. Check the Distance to Wall on the spec table for the chair you're considering.
How to Measure Your Room (Step by Step)
You can do this in about 10 minutes with a tape measure, painter's tape and a pen.
- Pick the spot. Choose the wall where the chair will go and note where the outlet is. Plan the power cord so it isn't in a walkway.
- Measure the wall gap you can offer. Measure from the wall to where the back of the chair will sit. Allow for baseboards, outlets and anything mounted on the wall, and add an inch or two as a buffer.
- Measure the depth you have. Measure from the wall straight out to the nearest thing in front of the chair, such as a table, a bed or the opposite wall. Compare that with the chair's estimated depth (its wall gap plus its reclined length).
- Measure width and side room. Compare the chair's width with the space, and leave room on at least one side to get in and out.
- Tape it out. Mark the chair's footprint on the floor with painter's tape and walk around it. If it feels tight with tape, it will feel tighter with a chair.
- Check the doors. Measure the narrowest door, hallway and stairway turn on the delivery path. Compare it with the chair's Minimum Door Width where listed, and with the shipping box sizes (see the delivery table below).
- Check stairs and elevators. See the delivery notes below, because curbside delivery stops at the ground-floor entry.
- Check swing and sight lines. Make sure a reclined chair won't hit a door swing, a bed, a radiator or a low table.
- Write it down. Use the worksheet below and send it to us.

Wall-Hugger Chairs We Sell and the Room They Need
These five chairs, a selection rather than our full lineup, list a Distance to Wall of 4 inches or less. They are sorted from smallest gap to largest. All numbers are in inches and come from each product page's spec table. "Estimated depth" is wall gap plus reclined length.
| Chair | Distance to Wall | Upright length | Reclined length | Width | Estimated depth from wall | Minimum door width |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ergotec ET-180 Pluto | 1" | 57.1 | 66.2 | 30.0 | 67.2 | Not listed |
| Osaki OS-Maxim 3D LE | 2" | 60.6 | 72.4 | 29.9 | 74.4 | Not listed |
| Kyota Hatsumei M900 | 2" | 64 | 74 | 32 | 76.0 | 31" |
| Infinity Luminary Syner-D | 2" | 63.0 | 77.2 | 31.9 | 79.2 | Not listed |
| Ogawa Master Drive AI 2.0 | 4" | 62.2 | 77.2 | 33.1 | 81.2 | Not listed |
Three things stand out:
- Smallest wall gap: the Pluto lists 1 inch and has the shortest reclined length of the five.
- Same gap, different depth: the Maxim, Hatsumei and Luminary all list 2 inches, but their reclined lengths run from 72.4 to 77.2 inches. A small wall gap doesn't mean a small footprint.
- Bigger chairs, bigger rooms: the Master Drive AI 2.0 lists 4 inches at the wall and reaches 77.2 inches when reclined, so plan for the most floor depth of this group.
The Synca CirC Compact is also very small (39 inches long and 21.6 inches wide upright, with a 22-inch Minimum Door Width) and lists a 4-inch Distance to Wall. Its page lists no reclined dimensions or zero gravity recline, so it isn't in these tables. Call us if you want to know how it reclines.
Space-Saving Chairs That Still Need More Room
Some chairs are labeled space-saving but need more room behind them. They can still be a good fit if you have a spot with about 6 to 11 inches to spare.
| Chair | Distance to Wall | Upright length | Reclined length | Width | Estimated depth from wall | Minimum door width |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Synca CirC Plus | 6" | 42.1 | 53.1 | 23.6 | 59.1 | 24" assembled / 28" in boxes |
| Osaki Nova II 3D+ | 8.5" | 60 | 67.5 | 29.5 | 76.0 | 29.75" |
| Ogawa Active XL DUO | 11" | 62 | 75.4 | 29.7 | 86.4 | 31" assembled / 29.7" disassembled |
The CirC Plus has the shortest reclined length of any chair in this guide (53.1 inches). Because it is a compact chair, confirm its recline range with us before you order. The Ogawa Refresh 3D lists a 10.7-inch Distance to Wall, so it belongs in this group too.
If you don't need rollers, the Svago Lite 2 is a zero gravity recliner rather than a massage chair, and it lists a 16-inch Distance to Wall.
Will It Fit Through My Door and Up My Stairs?
The chair isn't always what stalls. The boxes are. Compare the narrowest point on your delivery path with the Minimum Door Width and the box sizes below.
| Chair | Minimum door width (listed) | Shipping boxes listed (L x W x H, inches) |
|---|---|---|
| Ergotec ET-180 Pluto | Not listed | 1 box: 46.5 x 30.3 x 45.9 |
| Osaki OS-Maxim 3D LE | Not listed | Not listed |
| Kyota Hatsumei M900 | 31" | 2 boxes: 58 x 31 x 27 and 47 x 17 x 29 |
| Infinity Luminary Syner-D | Not listed | 3 boxes: 67 x 33 x 34, 61 x 17 x 26 and 25 x 20 x 24 |
| Ogawa Master Drive AI 2.0 | Not listed | 3 boxes: 57.7 x 30.3 x 39.4, 50 x 15 x 26 and 22.8 x 19.7 x 24.4 |
| Synca CirC Plus | 24" assembled / 28" in boxes | 1 box: 45 x 28 x 40.25 |
| Osaki Nova II 3D+ | 29.75" | 1 box: 61 x 30.3 x 33.9 |
| Ogawa Active XL DUO | 31" assembled / 29.7" disassembled | Page lists "Box 1" only: 52.4 x 30.7 x 49.6 |
Here is what to know about delivery on our Shipping Information page:
- Free curbside delivery goes to the 48 contiguous states. The freight company delivers to a carport or first-floor entryway, and assembly is up to you.
- In-Home Delivery brings the chair just inside the doorway, with no stairs.
- Second-story apartment with no elevator: the delivery company won't bring the chair up the stairs. In-Home Delivery and Assembly, which costs extra, is the option to consider.
- In-Home Delivery and Assembly uses a two-person furniture installation team that delivers up to 2 flights of stairs and sets up the chair in the room you choose. Our Shipping Information page says they are a furniture installation team, not professional massage chair installation experts.
- Chairs are heavy. Plan for extra help with the boxes.
How Do I Try It Before I Commit?
Our 30-Day In-Home Trial lets you see how a chair fits your room and your routine. See our Refund Policy for the return terms, including any fees.
In a small home, one rule matters: keep all the packaging for the first 30 days, because our Shipping Information page says we do not accept returns that are not in the original packaging. The Refund Policy lists the charges that apply if the original boxes are missing. Decide ahead of time where the boxes will live.
The easiest way to avoid a return is to check the fit first. Send us your measurements and we'll check them against the chairs you like.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much space does a wall-hugger massage chair need?
Wall clearance is the manufacturer's listed Distance to Wall. Among the chairs in this guide it ranges from 1 inch to 11 inches, with several at 2 to 4 inches. You also need floor space in front for the reclined length, so check the spec table.
How close can a massage chair be to the wall?
Check the chair's Distance to Wall spec. Among the chairs in this guide, the Ergotec ET-180 Pluto lists 1 inch, and others list 2 to 4 inches. Chairs that aren't wall-huggers need more, so add a small buffer for baseboards.
Do space-saving massage chairs still recline to zero gravity?
Every chair in the tables above lists a zero gravity recline. The seat slides forward as the back reclines, so the chair stays closer to the wall. The Synca CirC Compact lists none, so check each chair's page.
Will a massage chair fit through my door?
Compare your narrowest door, hallway or stair turn with the chair's Minimum Door Width, where listed, and with its shipping box sizes. Listed minimum door widths in this guide run from 22 to 31 inches. Send us your measurements and we'll check them.
Can I put a massage chair in an apartment?
Yes, if the chair fits the room and the delivery path. For a second-floor walk-up with no elevator, curbside delivery stops at the ground-floor entry, so consider In-Home Delivery and Assembly, which covers up to 2 flights of stairs and costs extra.
What if it doesn't fit once it's home?
Our 30-Day In-Home Trial applies, but returns must go back in the original packaging, and fees can apply. Read the Refund Policy first. To avoid a return, call or send us your measurements before you order.
